A recent report by the non-profit Center for Advanced Defense Studies (C4ADS) identified almost 10,000 instances of ship's Global Positioning System (GPS) devices being spoofed by Russian interference. Mr. Dana Goward gave us an excellent history lesson on the development of GPS and GNSS spoofing from a fiction account in film to being an everyday problem.

In the 1997 James Bond movie "Tomorrow Never Dies", the villain used GPS spoofing to lure a British warship off course and try to start a war.

In 2013 Professor Humphries and his team demonstrated how it could also be done to a manned vessel with an alerted and attentive crew.
