The Enormous Future Challenge to Systems Engineering

  • Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory 11100 Johns Hopkins Road Laurel, MD, 20723 United States (map)

Abstract: Technology never waits for the slow to adapt, and it is particularly ruthless to those who profess to use technology but refuse to adapt their methods, techniques, and processes.  Throughout modern history, rapid advances in technology have presented fantastic new opportunities usually accompanied by fantastic new risks.  At no other time than now has this fact been more ominous. The relentless advance of Artificial Intelligence and the emergence of 5th Generation communications, combined with the aging/crumbling existing infrastructure present a most formidable triple threat to Systems Engineering and its practitioners.  The survivability of the profession depends upon a systems engineering vision that will meet this triple threat.
