Collaboration with Washington Metro Area (WMA) Chapter - Steve Dam presented on October 26, 2024!
Abstract: In a presentation titled, “Tides of Triumph: A Celebration of Digital Engineering Success,” Mr. Daniel Hettema, Director of Digital Engineering, Modeling & Simulation (DEM&S), will describe how DEM&S and the Department is moving the Digital Engineering (DE) needle forward. This includes addressing challenges in transitioning to full digital implementation with the Defense Industrial Base. By recognizing and celebrating small wins, DEM&S aims to foster organizational change that will accelerate DE acquisition, delivering more effective solutions to the warfighter. In his presentation, Mr. Hettema will challenge attendees to take on the role of change managers to meet key initiatives in progress. The session will pinpoint critical transition points for analysis and operational efficiency, as well as identify potential gaps for future needs. To leverage the benefits of DE processes and tools for optimizing designs in the virtual world, each Service developed implementation plans to realize the focus areas outlined in the National Defense Science and Technology Strategy (NDS). DEM&S was featured at the Digital Innovation Center of Excellence (DICE) Digital Engineering Conference in Idaho Falls, ID, on April 30 through May 1.
About the Speaker: Mr. Daniel Hettema is the Director of Digital Engineering, Modeling and Simulation within the Office of the Under Secretary of Defense for Research and Engineering. In his role, he oversees DoD-wide strategy & policy and promotes best practices for the advancement of digital tools and techniques across the lifecycle.
Under his leadership; participation has doubled in the Community of Practice, visits to the Digital Engineering Body of Knowledge (DEBoK) have increased 30-fold, and the first-of-its-kind of DoD and Government Agency interactive collaboration event has been established. Daniel brings extensive experience in both industry and government; In addition to the DoD, Daniel has supported both the DOE and IC.
He has held leadership roles in multiple professional organizations, holds a B.S. in Systems Engineering from George Mason University, a M.S. in Space Systems Engineering from Johns Hopkins University, is an INCOSE Certified Systems Engineering Professional, and is a level four SysML modeler
Purpose: The INCOSE Chesapeake Chapter seeks to award a merit-based scholarship to an undergraduate or graduate level student in recognition of their commitment to the engineering field of study and to aid them in accomplishing their career goals.
The Chesapeake Chapter scholarship is open to applicants that meet the criteria:
• Be an academically competitive, well-rounded, college student.
• Be pursuing a science or engineering field of study (i.e., engineering, math, computers, cyber, or IT any major that addresses electrical engineering, computer engineering & science, information technology, cyber, mathematics, physics, aerospace engineering, mechanical engineering and apply their studies directly to Systems Engineering.
• Have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale. Special performance can lead to consideration in cases of lesser GPA.
• All Merit scholarships are STEM based.
• To serve a broader number of engineering students and encourage new participation, past CC Scholarship winners will not be eligible.
Note: Students who anticipate a degree in other sciences, like pre-med, pre-law, biology, environmental, or any form of engineering that does not address/support systems engineering, are not likely to receive this scholarship.
